The loss of motion picture celluloid is not tragic concerning narrative filmmaking. Though aficionados and auteur directors will beg to differ, I've come to accept that digital is the way of the future.
No, the loss of celluloid is a tragedy only when it comes to experimental films. The ability of working directly on the material itself--scratching, painting on the surface, double exposures--will be lost. All of my films originate on different formats of celluloid, and when celluloid is no longer produced, I will also stop making experimental films.
